Birthday Jams

Birthdays have always been a big deal to me. I have no problem with people wanting to show me how much they love me…and cake is high on my list of best things on earth.

I just had another go by… it was a quiet one. I’m in a new part of the world, but friends from NY gave me hollers, and I’m pretty good at having a good time all by myself. My dad was around, of course – we watched my new home team the Rays pull off a thrilling 9th inning victory, and I picked up lots of new music (old music really, on vinyl) to keep me stimulated.

One of my favorite ways to spend a birthday is on a gig, hanging with musicians and finding euphoria in some emphatic chorus of a 12 bar blues. I had a great many birthday gigs in the last decade. One such happening was in 2002 at Louis Bar in the east village of nyc. The owner Andrew Rumpler was a good friend and always hooked us up food & drink-wise (miss those coffees and the olives!), at the time bassist Mike Savino and I were housemates and close friends, and later that evening my good pal Emanuele Coluccia came down and played on the last few tunes. I’m pretty sure I hear Josaih Wolf’s voice in the crowd as well, but he did not play (I don’t think);  the drummer was Chris Sbrolini, essentially the  house drummer, well-suited to Andrew’s taste, and another comrade.

I came across the minidiscs for the gig last night while looking for something else. Here is the first tune we played – “Just Friends“. As always there’s a decent bit of crowd noise…

Most fans know we played at Louis at least once a week for a good three years – it was an incredible experience. If you’ve been to the bar in the early 2000′s you know it was a very unique, cool & swingin’ hang. The picture above is of a cd we ‘released’ with some of the best performances recorded at Louis. This version of “Just Friends” is not the same one as on the cd, but the version of “Well You Needn’t” found on the disc is from the same birthday gig.

Louis Bar changed hands in ’04. Former owner Andrew Rumpler, who designed and built the bar himself, is now designing unique furniture. One of his latest creations is the “Tatum Lounge” (after Art Tatum), which is a chair made out of piano keys. Very cool. You can check out his website here.

As always thanks for stopping by. Lord bless – Kenny

Tracks from KMT II now available!

Some of the finer tracks from our 2005 cd “Kenny MacKenzie Trio II” are now available for download at tradebit via our store page for $0.99 each! This album has been unavailable for some time now, and I’m glad to finally be able to get the music heard again.

Albums are listed in chronological order so scroll to the bottom to see them. There are even cool little player buttons to listen before you buy. If you like and want to purchase them I suggest using the paypal “add to cart” buttons to the far right – this will prevent you from being redirected to the Tradebit site which only facilitates 1 song on a page (!).

If this makes you happy give us a shout. Proceeds will help pay for production of the next release.

Also – still going on is the free mp3 download for people who become fans or friends at either facebook or myspace.  Who doesn’t like free music? and we certainly appreciate your support. Maybe we’ll see you there. :)

Hey from Kenny

Apologies for not being a more diligent blogger, tweeter, fb’er etc. I’ve been feelin’ the electro bug lately – if any of you are into some rpm/beats et al – I do my own special brew… some love it, some find it a bit too retro…  I do what I do – just as in jazz. I just put out an online-only release of Christmas material called “Nativity Set”. If you’ve got 2 bucks and feel like taking a chance on some new holiday music – you can get it here.

I’ve written some new jazz music that will hopefully get recorded sometime this year – also contemplating remastering some of the tracks off of KMT II since most of the world hasn’t heard any of it – some of it is pretty hoppin’ (Savino/Higginbottom lineup). Some of it definitely needs to be re-recorded. If you haven’t heard tracks from it you can download “I Want More of You” for free. Check out Chris’s snappin’ solo right up front!

Special thanks to Radio Swiss Jazz for putting “Sarabande” into their rotation, to Chris at KFSK in Alaska for all the attention, & to all the other stations who are showing the love to  “There You Are”.

reroute

There’s a lot more interaction going on over at the Facebook page…so I’ve decided for now to make that the place for all the niceites and specials. CD sale specials, videos and free downloads happen there regularly – if you like those sorts of things – you can access them with 2 free button clicks – here’s the first:

Kenny MacKenzie Trio Facebook

When you get there – just click on “become a fan” and that’s it! You know…Bob’s your uncle. Unless of course you don’t have a facebook account. Then you have a few more clicks and what not. But you should – then you can join groups like “I Hate Cilantro”, “Thomas Crapper Day Awareness”, “French Horn Mania” and, my current favorite: ” Yo si creo en el Chupacabras”.

Spent most of yesterday tidying up this site – the bios page and the background photos. I see that those photos are still a few pixels too narrow for Firefox… when I feel like subjecting myself to major tedium I’ll go back and add 40 or so to them all.  :)

Enjoy your day!
